As a clinical psychologist, my passion is to make mental health accessible to everyone, from children, to adults, and to the elderly. I have worked in government healthcare settings, local and international NGOs, schools and colleges, and now I specialize in bringing mental health to the workplace providing training, workshops, and wellness talks to SME businesses and large corporations. I also work with individuals to provide psychological assessments as well as coaching and psychotherapy.

My career started in an NGO working with survivors of domestic violence, providing para-counselling, guidance and social work to them. In line with this, I also provided training for first-line responders and the public on the psychological and physical cost of  violence against women. In the next step of my career, I entered the educational setting (Sunway Education Group). For faculty members, I designed and conducted trainings on the importance of mental health, stress management, and identifying student mental health issues. My work with students was geared towards helping them prepare for life after school, equipping them with soft-skills such as effective communication, goal-setting, decision-making, and self-actualization.

Concerned about the continual rise of common mental disorders (e.g. depression and anxiety), I extended my reach to where most of Malaysians are situated—in the corporate workforce. At Rekindle I focus on developing Organisational Wellness and Employee Assistance Programme initiatives for the workplace. Together with the EAP team at Rekindle, we help organisations to promote healthy team cultures that are consistent with good mental health practices so that employees are better able to take care of themselves, and in turn increase the productivity of their organizations. Our EAP team provides coaching/counselling, wellness talks, workshops, and trainings. We draw upon our collective experiences in various sectors to facilitate adult learning that is relevant and engaging, combining didactic and experiential elements that maximize learning. Our work with organisations also includes partnering with schools, especially international schools whose needs can be well served by our team of internationally-trained professionals.

I also lead communications initiatives for Rekindle where I interface with media companies to coordinate Rekindle’s team of clinicians to provide engaging and helpful psychoeducational articles and interviews. Personally, I have appeared on TV talk shows such as Bella on 7, Astro Vizhutugal, Astro Vinmeen, and TV2 female-oriented shows. I have also contributed articles for Calibre Magazine, HerWorld, the Star, and New Straits Times to spread awareness and information on mental health.

As a clinician, I am trained in the use of psychological assessment tools such as The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, non-verbal intelligence testing, Conner’s Rating Scale and neuro-psychological assessments. In conducting assessments, I use a holistic, systemic approach to adequately capture the multifaceted complexity that make up human behavior and personality. During my stint in the medical sector (HUKM – Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), my scope of work included providing assessments, diagnoses, conducting interventions, and building community-awareness for both hospital inpatients and outpatients.

I use Solution Focused and Cognitive Behavioral approaches to help people explore ways to solve and overcome issues that are affecting them negatively. My work applies to both individuals whose issues are hindering performance as well as individuals who are functioning adequately but wish to improve performance (i.e. Performance Enhancement or Coaching). Like physiotherapy applied to a champion athlete, the skills that clients learn in psychotherapy during periods of “unwellness” can also be applied to enhancing many other areas of life when things are going well. For my on-going development as a mental health professional, I am working towards becoming trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, an emerging third wave therapy.

In addition to my professional work at Rekindle, I also serve as an executive member of the Women’s Aid Organization’s where I volunteer my time and expertise in changing gender stereotypes and ensuring equality among genders.

I believe that a healthy nation is only possible if the psychological health of its population is well-cared-for. The first step towards achieving psychological health is to increase mental health awareness. Do consider partnering with us. Please feel free to contact me here, ask for me specifically, and I will be glad get back to you.
