As a therapist, my greatest joy is to see individuals experience a breakthrough in their stuckness and conflicted family members reconcile and reconnect back with each other.
I have been a registered and licensed counsellor in Malaysia for more than 12 years working with individuals, couples, and families. I also have 10 years of experience supervising master’s level counselling interns, and 12 years lecturing and training in academic, professional, and community settings on counselling and mental health topics. Prior to working in mental health, I provided soft-skills human resources training in the financial sector.
I received my Master of Counselling from University Malaya in 2002 and a postgraduate diploma in Satir’s Systemic Brief Therapy in 2006. I completed my PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at Regent University in Virginia, USA in 2014. My other credentials include: Certified Choice Theory/Reality Therapist by The William Glasser International, Certified NLP Masters Practitioner by The Society of NLPTM, and Certified Timeline Therapist by ABNLP, and I am certified in Eye-Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR).
I am a certified administrator for various assessment tools, such as Leonard Personality Inventory (LPI), Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis (T-JTA), PREPARE-ENRICH, Couple Check-Up, and ABA TRAIT Personality Inventory. As part of my on-going continuing education, I am also working towards becoming certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples, and Therapeutic Play.
In my sessions, I draw on a variety of assessment tools (see above paragraph) to provide an understanding of a client’s personality, which serves as a framework for working through a client’s stuckness in life. My goal for you is to increase your awareness that you have a choice not be stuck where you are. My hope for you is that you will gain effective control over your life, and hence become a better choice maker. As Virginia Satir, the mother of family therapy once said, “the problem is not the problem; coping is the problem.” I believe that while external change may be limited and sometimes impossible, internal change is always possible.
I have developed several areas of specialty as a counsellor over the past 15 years. First, I specialize in career issues. I utilize Choice Theory/Reality Therapy and career assessment tools to address concerns such as career choice, study options, and career transition. Second, I look into building a person’s self-esteem and self-confidence. I use Satir’s Personal Iceberg Metaphor to help clients understand their expectations, yearnings and wants, and to move toward their desired goals and direction in lives. Next, I utilize Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy and other systemic approaches to address couples and marital concerns (such as communication problems, forgiveness issues, conflict management, and other relationship challenges). I also use therapeutic play in helping children that are affected by their parents and family issues. My final area of specialty is getting rid of past emotional baggages. I practice EMDR, Timeline Therapy, and NLP on a regular basis to enable clients to get rid of past traumas, inappropriate emotional reactions (such as burst of anger, periods of depression, sadness, anxiety, and fear), as well as overcoming limiting decisions (such as: “I’m not good enough,” “I’ll never be happy,” or “I don’t deserve a great marriage.”). Getting rid of past issues enable clients to move forward and gain control of their lives again.
In addition to my work as a private-practice counsellor, I have been trained and I give training on Critical Incident Stress Management. I have provided both professional and humanitarian assistance to crisis situations in Malaysia and abroad (e.g. MH370 in 2014, flood-relief in Bangladesh since 2007, Medicins sans Frontieres in 2005-2006). I am open to be engaged by corporations and non-profit organisations to provide assistance with crisis management needs.
My ultimate goal as a therapist is to help you achieve your potential and live effectively in your personal, family and career life.
