Dealing with life challenges can be difficult for everyone involved, be it directly or indirectly. The overwhelming feeling of distress may be debilitating and lead to dysfunction. My task as a clinical psychologist is to evaluate and integrate this information, and tailor an individualised plan to help clients effectively alleviate their distress and regain healthy functioning. I work collaboratively with my clients towards our shared goals while reinforcing their strengths, resources, skills and sense of self.
As a clinical psychologist, I believe in inclusivity in providing mental health services for all. Providing a safe space for everyone, particularly members of marginalised groups irrespective of their ethnicities, ages, gender identities, sexual orientations, religious beliefs, disabilities, or social class has been my main priority. I also believe in the importance of the awareness of intersectionality in providing mental health services to my clients.
My interest in the field of psychology began early in life, at the age of 15, and I have not strayed away from that path ever since. Back then, I learned to provide comfort and a listening ear to those around me. Their deepening trust and the empathy I developed towards them further reassured me on my choice to become a clinical psychologist.
I completed my undergraduate degree in Sunway University and then pursued my Master's degree in Clinical Psychology at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. I received rigorous training through in-patient and out-patient work at UKM Medical Centre in both adult psychiatry as well as child and adolescent psychiatry. During my training in this hospital, I conducted assessments, provided diagnoses, carried out individualised treatment plans with patients, as well as worked in a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals on case management.
Being trained in a medical centre, I gained experience working with individuals of diverse ethnicities and age groups ranging from young children to older adults. I have worked with children and adolescent with special needs, focusing on skills training as well as providing sexual health education. I have also worked with children and adolescents with various emotional and behavioural problems. In my work with children and teens, I would include parents and family members in the therapeutic process for continuity of therapeutic outcomes at home.
I am trained to conduct psychological assessments for both adults and younger clients including the Weschler Adult Intelligent Scale, Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children, non-verbal intelligence testing, neurocognitive tests, personality tests, tests of adaptive functioning as well as various screening and diagnostic tools. I adhere to the holistic approach in conducting assessment while corroborating multiple sources of information to encapsulate the accurate representation of the client.
As for my therapeutic approach, I am trained to conduct Cognitive Behaviour Therapy as my main modality. During therapy, we would be focusing on the here and now. Together with my clients, we will work on modifying maladaptive behaviours and thought patterns while enhancing positive coping skills. I also use a Solution Focused approach in aiding my clients to reinforce their resources and work together to achieve their desired goals.
I am culturally of Malay origin. Born and raised in Malaysia, I have a natural affinity to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities.
