In an ideal world we would wish to be the agents of change in our own lives. But making change on our own can seem like an impossible task in the face of external pressures, internal insecurities, relationship discord, trauma, guilt, shame and loneliness. It is easy to feel overwhelmed, utterly desperate and bereft of hope. It takes immense courage to take that first step to reach out for help because it can feel intimidating and unfamiliar.
I believe in the healing power of therapy. Over the years I have had the deep privilege of walking with clients going through personal difficulties. I have worked with individuals, couples and families from diverse backgrounds dealing with varying issues such as depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relationship issues, family conflicts, parenting problems, and post-traumatic stress. These issues often interrupt our daily lives and can feel debilitating. However, a trusting relationship with a therapist where we feel accepted, understood and supported can be a catalyst for growth, change and developing fulfilling relationships.
Prior to becoming a Marriage and Family Therapist, I worked as a lawyer for almost 15 years. I dealt with a wide range of litigation work as a legal assistant and legal associate. My experience of working with couples seeking divorce and dealing with custody issues piqued my interest in the field of marriage and family therapy. During a transitional period in my life, I decided to leave the legal profession and learn more about the helping profession instead. I completed the Masters in Counselling at HELP University and was registered and licensed as a counsellor by Lembaga Kaunselor, Malaysia. I was a therapist at Rekindle for 2 years before leaving for the United States to pursue a doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. After I completed my doctoral degree at Michigan State University, I was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. I worked as an instructor, conducted research and supervised graduate students in the Couple and Family Therapy doctoral program in their clinical work. I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (Michigan License: 4101006863), and an Approved Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Having returned home to Malaysia, I am happy to be able to restart my practice at Rekindle Therapy and be involved with Rekindle Academy as a Clinical Supervisor.
I am a single mother to two grown up daughters. During my years as a full time mum, I also volunteered as a medical social worker in Kota Bahru. The role of being a mum to my girls has been the most important role of my life and has informed my understanding of evolving parent child relationships. My lived experiences and working with diverse clients in the US and Malaysia have given me a unique perspective on the need for cultural competency and to honour intersectional realities.
I am an integrative trauma-informed therapist and I use evidence based treatments such as Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, Systems modalities, Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Mindfulness to work collaboratively with my clients. My approach to healing is formulated on the integration of the body-mind. I believe that you are the expert on your life experience and my aim is to provide an open, warm, safe and compassionate environment to support and empower you in your journey.
