Over the years of working with clients, I noticed our past experiences have shaped who we are today. It shapes the way we perceive, feel and act. We can choose to remain the same as how the past has shaped us or to become who we desire to be. I believe that growth and learning can take place in a healthy environment if we so desire and pursue. In therapy, I believe in providing a safe and encouraging space to individuals so that they can explore and create new experiences for themselves.
I am a Malaysian—born and raised locally by two working parents. I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Counselling, both from HELP University, Malaysia. Prior to becoming a Registered and Licensed Counsellor in Malaysia, I worked in an International NGO as a Marketing & Events Executive, advocating for the poor and marginalised around the world. My desire to explore mental health therapy began at the age of 15 years old. I found solace and comfort when I spoke to and was understood by the people around me. Since then, I began offering the same pair of listening ears to the people around me. I later decided to pursue my Masters in Counselling to further polish my skills in becoming a better, more empathetic helper.
I have experience working with individuals, couples and families who have childhood trauma-related concerns (e.g. abuse-related issues), depression, anxiety and relationship-related concerns (e.g. extramarital affairs and communication issues). I also provide coaching/counselling to employees through Rekindle’s Employee Assistance Programme, who may be struggling with work-related concerns, such as but not limited to workplace conflict, work stress and personal development.
I combine several therapy approaches in my work as a counsellor: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). I also incorporate mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques in my resource-development work with clients. My goal in therapy is to help you foster greater self-awareness so that you feel more empowered to manage and overcome the difficulties that are hindering you in life. As a counsellor, I will journey alongside with you, exploring and enabling you to help yourself overcome the deeper concerns in life. I firmly believe that my clients are the experts of their own lives and they can make good choices for themselves and their loved ones.
On top of my role as counsellor, I am an Adjunct Lecturer at Alpha-Omega International College and an Adjunct Supervisor in Monash University Malaysia. I enjoy teaching students group therapy and basic counselling skills; and I closely supervise students’ clinical work with their clients. When not working with clients or students, I highly enjoy foodie-travels for gastronomic discoveries with my wife and family members. I also set aside time volunteering in helping children with special needs.
